Conclusion
First of all, it is a little sad to think that all activities in this class will end with writing this reflection. Frankly speaking, it was not easy to carry out all weekly tasks throughout this semester, that is, to research and use new websites or apps every time and use them to plan virtual classes. Although the process was hard, this made me a wonderful person who was ignorant of technology and could make the lesson plan. From now on, I will tell you a great story about my growing up through this class!
As mentioned above, before I took this class, I was definitely at the first stage of seven stages in the Hampel and Stickler's Skills Pyramid. As a student, I was so ignorant of computers and IT machines that I would be called 'technologically illiterate' except for Internet usage and word usage needed to do my homework. Especially, I had to do a simple Excel work at the English academy I'm working at now, but I didn't know the basic function of Excel and how to use it, so another teacher even took my work. In fact, before taking this class, I was more worried about 'whether I could do well' than expected.
But after taking this class, I think I have grown up to level 4. First of all, as an entire-semester online lecture was conducted due to the Coronavirus, I started using an app called Zoom or Skype for the first time. At first, it was unfamiliar and difficult, but it was easy to use the app after listening to non-face-to-face lectures twice. The ability to understand the advantages and disadvantages of software, which is the third step, was quickly acquired in the course of explaining each software feature given in the task each week and analyzing its strengths and weaknesses. Through this stage, I have an insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the software I'm currently using and the new software. The fourth step, the ability to communicate with others online, seems to be the stage of my current stay at the end of class. In particular, I think I have been able to develop efficient online communication skills through the process of uploading assignments and giving feedback to other people's postings on the highly informative new website, which is called 'Wix'. Besides, all the contents of the class, which used Zoom to make a group presentation and discuss with professors or classmates, helped me develop my communication competence. Getting to level seven after taking the class was my ultimate lesson goal, but I am fully satisfied with level four. From now on, I will try to make active use of what I have learned in real class situations and create my own creative style.
Wang stated that there are four stages that language teachers go through when they are trained to use technology. They are ‘wow – this is exciting’, ‘uh-oh’, ‘anxiety’, and ‘internalizing’ stages. It was definitely the first step before I took this class on the premise that I was a teacher. Because, as I said earlier, I was completely ignorant of any "new" technologies. Therefore, when learning new technologies one by one through this class, surprise and novelty were greater than worries or difficulties. And now that I've finished all the classes, I think I've reached level four, which is the last stage. In fact, I think up to the midterms, I was at the third stage of anxiety. I have learned a lot from classes so far, but I was at a loss when, where, and how to use them. But now that the semester is over, I have realized how to melt it into my class by considering various situations. In particular, it served as an opportunity to internalize the skills that can be used to communicate interestingly with students and evaluate them fairly in class.
