<Evaluating a website ‘QuizN’ using Hubbard's criteria>
☆Profile of my students:
Age – 18 years old
Grade level – 2nd grade of high school
Proficiency level – basic level
(Students know some basic English words, but they don't know any English proverbs)
☆Objective of the course:
Students can memorize 10 different English proverbs they learned in class today.
☆Purpose of the website:
‘QuizN’ is a game-based learning platform. In other words, it is a site that organizes learning while solving quizzes in a fun way. Users (teachers and students) are free to create their own quizzes or see or solve quizzes that other users have already made. Quiz making is possible in real time or in mission form.
Evaluation according to Hubbard’s criteria
1. Technical preview
Q: Have you got the appropriate equipment available?
A: ‘QuizN’ is only available on the website because the app has not been made yet. It is also available only in Chrome. Therefore, anyone with electronic devices such as laptops, computers, tablets, smartphones, and Wi-Fi or data can use the website free of charge.
2. Operation
(1) Q: Is there a time limit on how long students have to give responses, or how long they see information?
A: Basically, 20 seconds is given to solve a problem. However, any person who makes a quiz can adjust the time limit per quiz, depending on the difficulty or specificity of the question. In particular, it is better to give more time to solve problems that can be solved after viewing some videos.
(2) Q: Do students have the freedom to move around the program?
A: In addition to real-time quizzes, ‘QuizN’ allows learners to learn autonomously by using the function of "Sharing the Solution" to put the contents of the day's classes in the form of quizzes without being restricted by time and space in addition to other online class materials. There is also a type of discussion quiz in ‘QuizN’, which, unlike other types, has no quantity limit or time limit, allows you to express and share your opinions very freely.
(3) Q: Does the student click, or speak, or type a word, or more than a word?
A: Students can click on the correct answer if the quiz is provided in a selective, OX or sequence-based format. Students can also express the answer in a short answer, debate-type or descriptive quiz with one word or more. However, the answer to the quiz cannot be explained in speaking yet. In this regard, I think it would be nice if ‘QuizN’ added the ability to record the correct answers.
(4) Q: Does the program just say if something is correct, or does it provide explanations, prompts, and help?
A: ‘QuizN’ tells the user whether the user's answer to each quiz is correct or not. If the user chooses the wrong answer, it does not provide a specific reason or explanation for why the other option must be the correct answer. First of all, I think it would be a more perfect site if the users solved the quiz and immediately told them whether it was the right answer or not, and then added to it to give them feedback on why this isn't the right answer and why something else is the right answer.
3. Teacher fit
Q: Does it fit your own approach?
A: I think ‘QuizN’ is very suitable and will blend in with my approach. The reason for this was that the goal of the course was to memorize ten English proverbs that students learned in class, as I said before, because it is never easy for students to understand and memorize ten English proverbs literally. However, if I borrow a fun quiz game format that utilizes visual and auditory data, it will have a much more efficient learning effect for learners.
4. Learner fit
Q: Do the contents, skills, and language level of the software suit your students' needs, and those of the syllabus?
A: Students are not sure what the Korean proverbs written in their native language mean and in what circumstances the proverbs can be used in, so it is natural that the proverbs in English, a foreign language, feel much more difficult. In particular, proverbs are literally just old adage, so it is a field that out of interest to students. In this situation, something more dynamic and self-contained is needed to attract their attention and motivate them to learn. I think it's too good for learners because students think they play games instead of studying through ‘QuizN’ while reducing stress on their studies.
5. Implementation
Q: Could you integrate the software easily into the course or curriculum?
A: Of course. I can make great use of this site as part of my class curriculum. First of all, I explain English proverbs about love, study, etc. to students in class. If I just explain it in words, most students understand only half of it. However, in order to wrap up today's class, if I invite students to the pre-made quizzes and organize their contents while solving the quiz, the students' learning effects can be doubled. Also, it's very easy to use because users don't need to log in just by using the link. In addition, students can expect higher learning effects by stimulating a bit of competition among classmates as their rankings are displayed while solving problems.
6. Appropriateness
Q: If the software were a human teacher, would you want that person teaching your students?
A: I don't think software can replace teachers. No matter how perfect a machine is, there is always an error, because no matter how perfect a site is, there is an error. Even this site has too many visible errors. For example, when solving descriptive or debatable quizzes, the site does not provide specific feedback or explanation for the wrong answers. Therefore, ‘QuizN’ can only play the role of supplementing the teacher's slightly insufficient explanation with an interest-oriented game method.
☆Reflection:
Last week I looked at the site for evaluation, and it was interesting that this week I was evaluating the site on another criteria. Since I am a student of the Department of Education and I have only been evaluating students or teachers in this subject, I think I was unconsciously thinking that evaluation is what people do to people. Especially, when I saw Hubbard's evaluation criteria and evaluated other things based on them, I thought that if they were followed, a lot of perfect apps or sites could be developed. It can be very helpful not only for learners, professors, but also for apps and sites themselves. Although there have been quite a few things that have failed to meet the evaluation criteria, I hope that Korea can also develop apps or sites that meet as many standards as possible as soon as possible.
